A note from our Executive Director
I am Joyce Coleman, EdS, with over 30 year of experience as an educator. In 1999, Dr. Ronald McWhirt, former Superintendent of Charleston County School District, hired me, a classroom teacher from Virginia, as principal of Mt. Zion Elementary School, on Johns Island. When I started my tenure at Mt Zion it was ranked as a “D” school. At the conclusion of my second year, it was ranked as a “B” school receiving the Palmetto Silver. In 2003, Virginia’s Governor Mark Warner appointed me as one of the first ten Virginia School Turnaround Specialist, credentialed at the University of Virginia. For 15 years, I worked diligently as a principal and turnaround specialist to provide quality education to children is some of the most chronic underperforming schools along the east coast. My track record displays a career of successfully transforming schools.
This fall, I applied to Charleston County School District to open an all-boys charter school for grades K- 8. On 04 January 2016, Prestige Preparatory Academy was unanimously conditionally approved by the CCSD’s Board of Trustees. This brick and mortar school is scheduled to open in August 2016 with grades K-4; 2017, K-5; 2018, K-6; 2019, K-7; 2020, K-8.
