What grades will the school serve?
Prestige Preparatory Academy will serve grades K-4 during the 2016-2017 school year. At that time, two schools within a school will exist: K-2 (Dream Builders University) and grades 3-4 (Dream Makers University). We will add a grade level each school year until we reach grade 8 in 2020.
Is Prestige Preparatory Academy free?
Absolutely! Prestige Preparatory Academy is public charter school. It is free and open to all boys in grades K-4 starting the 2016-2017 school year.
Why elementary grades?
Advocates and researchers emphasize that starting boys in an all boys' environment at an early age is beneficial both academically and socially. Prestige Preparatory Academy is designed to improve the performance of all boys, those doing well as well as those not doing so well in the traditional school setting. Research shows that African American and Hispanic boys tend to have lower grades and disproportionately more discipline referrals, including suspensions.
Our goal is to make a difference by offering a choice of excellence for the boys of Charleston County.
Why all boys?
An all boys' school fosters a "brotherhood" that is special and makes students feel a part of something bigger than themselves (Harriman, 2014). Research affirms that boys learn differently, with different interest, needs, and goals. While these differences are often shaped by culture, many are grounded in biology (Roehikepartain, 2001). Addressing the hard-wiring of how boys develop and embrace learning opportunities that are distinctly beneficial is the premise of our success. Our rich and rigorous curriculum and teaching methodology capitalizes on the way boys learn. Instruction infuses techniques that recognize and encourages learning styles and tempos of boys.
Prestige Preparatory Academy offers our boys the:
• Freedom to be themselves.
• Freedom to be active.
• Freedom to experience competition, rivalry, hands-on-learning, and high-energy activities.
• Freedom to pursue their interest and talents without social stereotype.
• Freedom to explore interest in academics, arts, music, drama, and other activities without concerns of typecasting.
• Freedom to exhibit the "boys will be boys" mentality in a positive, wholesome manner of treating others with dignity, integrity and respect.
Prestige Preparatory Academy is committed to celebrating our boys' innate qualities, while also setting appropriate limits and channeling their energy into productive outcomes.
Who are founding parents?
Parents/guardians who agree to enroll the young boy in their life, during our first year in existence, are known as “founding parents.”
